What is dynamic number insertion?
Dynamic number insertion, or DNI, changes the phone number on your website to match how each visitor found you. When they call, you know which ad or search sent them.
How it works
- 1. Each ad gets its own phone number. One for your Google ads, one for Facebook, one for an email, and so on.
- 2. A small piece of code sits on your website. It sees where each visitor came from.
- 3. The number on the page changes. The visitor sees the number that belongs to their ad.
- 4. The call is matched to the ad. When that number rings, the call counts for that ad.
Two kinds of DNI
- One number per source. Every visitor from the same ad sees the same number. It is simple and needs few numbers.
- One number per visitor. Each visitor gets a number from a pool for a short time, so you can see the pages and search words behind each call. It needs more numbers.
Why it matters
Without DNI, every caller dials the same number, and you can’t tell which ads are working. With it, you can put your money into the ads that make the phone ring. What is call tracking?
