TCPA · Do Not Call list
What is the Do Not Call list?
The National Do Not Call Registry is a free list, run by the FTC, of phone numbers that sales callers must not call. Signing up never expires. This is a summary, not legal advice.
How to sign up
- It is free. Sign up at DoNotCall.gov, or call 1-888-382-1222 from the phone you want to add.
- It does not expire. Your number stays on until you take it off, or until it is disconnected and given to someone else.
- Give it time. Your number shows up the next day, but sales calls can take up to 31 days to stop.
- It does not block calls. It tells sales callers who follow the law not to call you. It does not stop scammers.

Who can still call you
- Political calls
- Charities
- Debt collectors
- Calls that just give you information
- Surveys
- Companies you recently did business with, or that you gave written permission to call
The calls in the top five groups can’t include a sales pitch. If you ask any company to stop calling, it must stop (FTC).
What a business that makes sales calls must do
- Check the list at least every 31 days. To use the FTC rule’s safe harbor, you call from a copy of the registry no more than 31 days old (16 CFR 310.4(b)(3)(iv)).
- Skip listed numbers, unless the person agreed in writing to your calls, or has a recent business relationship with you (16 CFR 310.4(b)(1)(iii)(B)).
- “Recent” has a set length: 540 days (about 18 months) after a purchase, or 90 days (about 3 months) after the person asked about your product (16 CFR 310.2).
- Keep your own do-not-call list. When someone asks you to stop, honor it within 10 business days, and keep it for 5 years (47 CFR 64.1200(d)).
- Call between 8 a.m. and 9 p.m., in the person’s time zone (16 CFR 310.4(c)).
States can have their own do-not-call lists and rules too. See the state laws we checked.
Keeping proof of written permission
Written permission is how a business may call a listed number. Kapture reads the consent: it captures the exact wording on the page, word for word, the moment the person agrees. Each record is kept in your own connected storage, and it travels with the lead.
Kapture is $0.001 per lead recording, or $0.005 a hosted form with recording, with your own connected storage. New accounts get 2,000 free tokens, no card needed.
