How to port a phone number

To port a phone number, sign up with the new phone company and ask it to move your number. Keep your old service on until the move is done.

Step by step

  • 1. Check your old contract. You may still owe a cancellation fee or a balance.
  • 2. Do not cancel your old service yet. If you cancel it, you can lose the number.
  • 3. Ask the new company to port your number. Give them your 10-digit number and the account details they ask for.
  • 4. Wait for the move. The new company handles it with the old one.
  • 5. Test it. Call the number and make sure it rings in the right place. Then close anything left on the old account.

What the FCC rules say

  • You can keep your number when you switch companies, if you stay in the same area. That works between landline, internet and mobile phone companies.
  • Your old company can’t refuse to port your number, even if you still owe it money. You may still have to pay what your contract says.
  • A simple port must be done in one business day. A simple port is usually one line. Moving from a landline to a mobile phone can take a few days.
  • Companies may charge a fee to port. You can ask if it can be waived.
