What is a DID number?
A DID number is a phone number that rings straight through to one person, team or system, with no switchboard in between. DID stands for Direct Inward Dialing.
In plain terms
A DID is a regular phone number that a business rents from a phone company. The calls arrive over the internet, so one office can have hundreds of them without hundreds of phone lines.
What businesses use DIDs for
- A direct line for each person or team. Callers skip the main menu.
- A local number in each city. Customers see a number from their own area.
- One number for each ad. When that number rings, you know which ad brought the call. What is call tracking?
What a DID costs
You pay a monthly fee for each number, plus a price per minute for calls.
Kurrent runs on a phone company called Telnyx. There, a local number is $1.00 a month. Calls coming in start at $0.0032 a minute. (Telnyx’s listed prices on October 13, 2026.)
