What is STIR/SHAKEN?

STIR/SHAKEN is the system US phone companies use to check that the caller ID on a call is real. It was built to stop callers from faking the number they call from.

How it works

When you place a call, your phone company adds a stamp to it. The stamp says how sure the phone company is that you are allowed to use that number.

The phone company at the other end reads the stamp before the call rings.

The three ratings

  • A (full). The phone company knows the customer and knows the customer may use this number.
  • B (partial). It knows the customer, but not whether they may use this number.
  • C (gateway). It only knows where the call entered its network.

What it means for your business

Calls with a weaker rating are more likely to be blocked or shown as possible spam.

The stamp comes from your phone company, so it helps to hold your numbers in your own phone company account. What is BYOC?

STIR/SHAKEN checks the number, not what the call is about. A stamped call can still be one nobody wants.
